LLPH urges all Senators to vote NO on the McConnell-Burr Amendments which will weaken the USA Freedom Act and allow the NSA more power under the bill than it already has.
The Hill reports,
McConnell (R-Ky.) is pushing a handful of amendments to the reform bill, known as the USA Freedom Act.
His amendments would require that private companies notify Congress if they are going to change their data retention policies, mandate that Director of National Intelligence James Clapper certify that the new system is working, and provide additional time to switch over to the new arrangement.
Several of the amendments have the backing of some Democrats and Republicans, making it unclear whether they might be approved.
But there is also strong opposition to some of McConnell’s proposals.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) slammed one McConnell measure, which would amend the USA Freedom Act’s requirement that outside experts serve as amicus curiae, or friends of the Court, to weigh in on United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA) decisions.
McConnell wants to undercut that section so it “shall have no force or effect,” according to his amendment. Instead, he wants to bolster FISA’s oversight of the experts.
Blumenthal said that would “water down and undercut and eviscerate the role of the independent experts.”
Blumenthal added the amendment would “weaken the bill” and require that it go back to the House. “We’ve already delayed long enough,” he added.
The Senate is expected to vote on the amendments on Tuesday, along with a procedural vote paving the way for final passage of the USA Freedom Act.
LLPH already opposes the USA Freedom Act and will likely score against the bill in our Senate Scorecard. We will likely score against all of these amendments which would weaken the bill, and we will definitely score against the USA Freedom Act if these weakening amendments pass. It is time for liberty to stand, which is why we #StandwithRand!
