NOTE: Rep. King, while his score is insufficient for an endorsement, could receive an endorsement from LLPH before the general election next year if his score for the 113th Congress, 2nd Session increases to be above a B-. We will issue a formal and final report before the end of July 2014.
LLPH Recommended Rep. Steve King (R-IA 04)
LLPH is proud to recommend Rep. Steve King (R-IA 4) for re-election. He received a 74% (C) on LLPH’s 2013 Congressional Scorecard. On the major issues, Rep. King has stood with conservatives and has been a true leader on so many issues that a score cannot fully give him justice for his hard work this session.
Rep. King has time and again bucked the GOP leadership from voting against the $60.4 Billion Sandy funding bill, opposing VAWA, and supporting the RSC Budget. He signed the Meadows Defund Obamacare Letter. And earlier in January 2013, while most Republicans were falling behind leadership in favor of a 3-month suspension of the debt ceiling, Rep. King boldly stood up and voted NO! Most importantly, Rep. King voted AGAINST both the Senate Debt Ceiling/Continuing Resolution in October 2013, and he recently voted against the Ryan-Murray Budget. What pulled Rep. King’s score down a lot was his support for the Farm Bill. A lot of votes that were included in our spending cut scorecard had to do with the Farm Bill, and Rep. King voted against several of these cuts as he is a member of the House Agriculture Committee. We were disappointed in Rep. King’s actions and votes concerning the Farm Bill.
But Rep. King definitely has potential to improve next session. Rep. King was a leader on the immigration issue and we are sure that when amnesty bills come to the floor, he will be able to lead in opposition to them. We also hope that Rep. King will take up more of a willingness to fight wasteful spending just as he has with his fights against debt ceiling increases. As we previously noted, if Rep. King increases his score next session (whose scorecard we will end in July 2014), he has the potential to receive our endorsement, especially due to his vote against the Ryan-Murray Budget and raising the debt ceiling.
