Still, deep in the text are new initiatives meant to benefit everything from olive oil to sushi rice. One could expand crop insurance for alfalfa. Others would promote Christmas trees and marble countertops. Catfish farmers also get a morsel: a plan to create profit-margin insurance for them.
The products represent a tiny fraction of the $440 billion U.S. farm economy. Yet each is slated to receive special treatment — either through subsidized insurance, promotional programs or protections against imports — in the bill, which carries an estimated 10-year price tag of $939 billion.
