LLPH commends Senator Johanns (R-NE) for correctly voting against raising the debt ceiling without spending cuts.
Here is his statement from his press release:
WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns (R-Neb.) released the following statement after voting against increasing the nation’s debt limit.
“The problem facing our country is spending,” Johanns said. “Continuing down the path we are on means saddling our children and grandchildren with a huge debt. It is bad medicine to continue raising our debt ceiling without addressing the very problem that is making us ill. Making the tough choices to reduce our spending is the only cure.”
“Current law already requires the Senate Majority Leader to pass a budget, something he has ignored. I have little faith that today’s vote will change this. It’s time to display the courage and will to address runaway spending, while also paying our debts. That’s why I supported an amendment that would have generated dollar for dollar spending cuts to balance the debt limit increase, but the Senate rejected this responsible approach.”
NOTE: Johanns supported an amendment offered by Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) that required cuts equal to or greater amounts to any increase in the debt limit. Johanns also supported an amendment by Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) which would instruct the Senate Finance Committee to offset the cost of raising the debt ceiling with spending cuts. Both of these amendments failed.
LLPH commends Senator Johanns and encourages him to continue to vote against any further increases without spending cuts.
