LLPH thanks Rep. Matt Salmon (R-AZ 5) for voting against raising the debt ceiling for three months without any spending cuts. We did NOT score this as a key vote (we did use it as an extra credit vote), due to our understanding that there was a provision that would force the senate to pass a budget (which we want to happen). But there were no spending cuts. In the future, LLPH will fully oppose any debt ceiling bill without spending cuts.
Here is what Congressman Salmon stated in a press release:
Jan 23, 2013 Press Release
WASHINGTON—Today, Congressman Matt Salmon (AZ-05) issued the following statement regarding his vote against raising the debt ceiling.
“As I have said many times before, I came back to Washington dead serious about cutting spending and balancing our budget. Ultimately, I could not in good conscience support raising the debt limit without corresponding reductions in spending to offset the increase in borrowing. It’s time we start voting to actually reduce spending and begin the process of balancing the budget. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the House to begin doing just that.”
In the future, LLPH will fully oppose any bill without spending cuts.
